Drive to Valadolid
Suggestion: Pick up a rental car at the hotel and drive from Playa del Carmen to Valadolid. The small district capital of Valladolid is not far from Chichen Itza, but is usually spared the large crowds of visitors and thus offers a welcome alternative. The cathedral, the most important building in the historic center, is located in the recently redesigned main square.
Cenote Zaci
In the middle of Valladolid - near the center - there is the opportunity to cool off on or after a hot day swimming in a pool created by nature: in Cenote Zaci. This cenote - doline, sinkhole - is half open, half still vaulted by limestone. Stalactites hang down from this limestone ceiling. The refreshing turquoise water is shared with peaceful little black catfish. There is enough space for everyone, because the Cenote Zaci has a diameter of about 50 meters and is supposedly more than 80 meters deep.
Boat trip on the Rio Lagartos
In the National Park Rio Lagartos dozens of bird species can be observed, which stay here all year round. First and foremost, hundreds of flamingos can be observed here, searching for food in the shallow waters of the lagoon surrounded by mangrove forests. During the two-hour boat trip, you will also have the opportunity to float weightlessly in the high-salinity water, like in the Dead Sea.
- Breakfast
Chichen Itza - Merida
On the main road you will drive to Chichen Itza, 40 kilometers away. The central building of the Mayan and Toltec site of Chichen Itza is the Temple of the Kukulcan, a pyramid dominated by astronomical and astrological ideas with 91 steps on each of the four sides. No less impressive is the huge ball court, once the scene of what today would consider a cruel sacrificial ritual. On the front side of the large central square is the Palace of the Thousand Pillars. Somewhat off to the side is the Observatory and other teaching sites dating from the Classic Maya period. The journey then continues to Merida.
- Breakfast
Merida
Merida - the white city - has a beautiful and lively historical center. The main square, called Plaza instead of Zocalo as in Mexico, houses the Cathedral, the Montejo House and the Government Palace, decorated with paintings by Fernando Castro Pacheco. Santa Lucia Park is one of the most romantic in the city, and Paseo de Montejo, a boulevard, gives a sense of the city's former wealth, when Yucatán was in the throes of sisal fever and Merida could boast more millionaires than Paris or New York.
Caves of Loltun
The Grottoes of Loltun consist of a several kilometer long, accessible cave system and offer a fantastic insight into the Mayan underworld. Once upon a time, a small city was located here underground, where a good 3,000 people lived. Loltun lived from pottery products that were exported far beyond the region. The 1.5-hour visit to Loltun is an unforgettable experience of your trip.
Uxmal Excavation
The Mayan site of Uxmal, which means "thrice built," is the largest of the cult sites in the Puuc region. The beautiful excavation is dominated by the Temple of the Fortune Teller and the Nun's Quadrangle. In addition, the ball court, as well as the turtle house and the governor's palace form other important points. Uxmal dominated the region of the northern Yucatán during the Classic Maya period (5th to 8th centuries) and established extensive trade relations with other Maya sites through a good road network.
- Breakfast
Merida – Tulum – Playa del Carmen
You drive on the highway from Merida to Cancún and cross the flat peninsula Yukatán almost in its whole width. Since the highway is good and almost free of curves, you will not need much more than three hours for the slightly more than 300 km. In just under two hours you will drive from Cancún to Tulum. The drive is on the immaculate coastal highway past several resorts to Tulum.
Excavation Tulum
The small but beautiful Mayan site of Tulum is certainly one of the most beautiful in the country, not least because of its extremely romantic location directly on the sea. The fortress proudly presents itself on rocks above the turquoise blue Caribbean Sea. It was from this rock that Spaniards saw the fortress city of Tulum in 1518, which - unlike many other Mayan sites in Yucatan - was still populated and full of life. Tulum was and is protected on three sides by a thick wall; the fourth "wall" is the sea with the Maya coral reef near the coast. In the bay situated under the excavation, a bath with a wonderful scenery is offered. Continuation to Playa del Carmen. Drop off the rental car at the hotel.
