Group tour in Iceland: magnificent landscapes - INTI Tours
To the natural wonders and cultural treasures of Iceland from 15.05.-24.05.2022
Iceland is considered a place of longing by many people today. The impressive landscape and the untouched, wild nature radiate a unique magic. At the edge of our continent, Iceland with its almost 300,000 inhabitants is the most sparsely populated country in Europe. The volcanic island in the North Atlantic spreads out on two continental plates - the North American and the Eurasian. Here you can perceive the history of the earth with all your senses. This trip to Iceland shows a mosaic of fire and ice, glaciers and lava, water and mountains, as well as some of the most magnificent landscapes in the world. One scenic highlight follows another like precious pearls - spouting geysers, active volcanoes, bubbling hot springs, fascinating glaciers, glittering waterfalls and cliffs lashed by wild ocean surf alternate. The barren, inhospitable highlands in the island's interior contrast with the green hilly landscape along the coasts. Experience the golden midnight sun, which cloaks the island, rich in natural wonders, in magical light. During the summer months, Icelanders celebrate their traditional festivals. Be inspired by the fabulous forces of nature and the fascinating sagas, myths and stories of this wonderful country. Your tour guide is Iceland specialist Dr. Andrea Susanne Opielka, who has lost her heart to the northern European countries and will introduce you to the "Island of Fire and Ice" with great knowledge and personal enthusiasm.

Thingvellir National Park - Borgarnes
Your island route begins immediately with one of Iceland's highlights: you visit the extraordinary Thingvellir National Park - a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Geologically interesting is the phenomenon that the American and Eurasian plates meet at exactly this point. Both plates drift apart by about a centimetre a year, so that the valley widens more and more. Above all, however, the place is historically the most important in the country, because the "Althing" - Iceland's first democratic parliament - met here in 930 and is still active today. The tour continues through breathtaking scenery with magnificent views. You will pass the Hraunfossar waterfalls, the historical centre of Reykholt and the thermal springs of Deildartunguhver. In Borgarnes, an old town centre with winding streets and old red wooden houses awaits you, as well as an unforgettable view of the two imposing mountains Borgarfjördur and Hafnarfjall. The National Museum, located on the island of Brákarey, is also beautiful and can only be reached via a bridge. In this museum you can learn a lot about the settlement of Iceland and beautiful handicrafts are exhibited there. The next two nights will be spent in the Borgarnes area.

Day trip to Snæfellsnes Peninsula
After breakfast, you will start today's day trip to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. It is commonly referred to as "Iceland in miniature" and is considered an area full of magic and beauty. The French author Jule Vernes immortalised the peninsula in his work "Journey to the Centre of the Earth". Enjoy the fabulous landscape with its wild charm. On the southern coast with the fishing villages of Hellnar and Arnarstapi, bizarre rock formations and striking bird cliffs await you. Return to the hotel and dinner. Overnight stay in Borgarnes.

Skagafjord - Akureyri
Continue towards the northeast through fantastic scenery. You will reach the Skagafjördur district, which is famous for its traditional Icelandic horse breeding. On the way, visit the museum farm Glaumbær - one of the best preserved farmsteads built in the typical Icelandic peat construction method. Continue over the Öxnadalsheidi plateau to the university town of Akureyri on Eyjafjördur, known as the "Capital of the North". Akureyri lies 50 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle, but has a mild climate with little rain and lush vegetation by Icelandic standards. A tour of Akureyri concludes the day. Overnight stay in the Akureyri area.

Mývatn area - Námaskard geothermal area
The absolute highlight of today is the excursion to the Mývatn area - probably the most popular region in Iceland. On the way, an impressive view opens up of the Godafoss waterfall, the so-called "waterfall of the gods". It owes its name to the Goden - Icelandic chieftain who announced Christianity as the state religion at the Thing in the year 1,000. The region around the "mosquito lake" is Iceland's largest nature reserve with the bizarre lava formations of Dimmuborgir and the pseudo-crater of Skútustadir. Continue towards the northeast, where the Krafla volcano created a large lava field between 1975 and 1984. Bubbling mud springs await you in the colourful geothermal area of Námaskard. Overnight stay in Husavík.

Whale Watching Tour - Ásbyrgi Rock Gorge - Dettifoss - Egilstadir
Today you will go on a whale watching tour from the harbour in Husavik. Not for nothing is Husavik considered the whale watching capital of Europe! Here you have the best chance of getting very close to the impressive animals. The tour continues via the horseshoe-shaped rock gorge Ásbyrgi, which is part of the Jökulsárgljúfur National Park. The Jökulsá á Fjöllum once flowed here, but has since dug a new riverbed further east. According to Norse mythology, Ásbyrgi was formed when Odin's eight-legged horse, Sleipnir, struck his hooves into the earth here. This legend has also earned Ásbyrgi the nickname "Odin's footprint". In the north of Vatnajökull National Park, the huge waterfall Dettifoss foams. The river Jökulsá plunges at Dettifoss into the over 100-metre-deep gorge Jökulsárgljúfur and impresses with its enormous power and energy. Visitors can get surprisingly close to the "plunging waterfall" - an absolutely impressive experience. In contrast, the highlands appear quiet, deserted and lonely as you continue your journey through the wasteland of Mödrudalur to the town of Egilsstadir. Overnight stay in the surroundings of Egilsstadir.

Drive through the East Fjords - Vatnajökull Glacier - Jökusárlon
Today we have a spectacular drive along the cliffs and the East Fjords of Iceland. The East Fjords are a truly unique area and during the last ice age the fjords were carved into the existing lava and further altered by new eruptions that took place under the ice cap. The East Fjords are home to great waterfalls, lava caves, unique history, historical museums, charming villages, wonderful wildlife and various hiking trails. Great views, sharp mountain peaks, incredible waterfalls, herds of reindeer, and the largest forest in Iceland await you. There are also charming fishing villages with a surprising art culture and colourful cafés. The bus passes many glacier tongues of the mighty Vatnajökull glacier, some of the island's most active volcanoes lie beneath its mighty ice cap. The day's destination is your accommodation near the glacier lagoon Jökusárlon. Overnight stay.

Depending on the weather, you have the option of an easy hike. Through the uninhabited sand desert Skeidarársandur you reach Kirkjubæjarklaustur, named after a medieval monastery. Continuing your journey, you cross the huge lava field of Eldhraun and reach the rock formation of Reynisdrangar in the very south of Iceland. Stop at one of the largest waterfalls, Skógafoss, which has been a protected nature reserve since 1987 and has an impressive 60-metre drop. Behind the sparkling water veil of Seljalandsfoss you can walk, a deafening experience. You will spend the night in Hella. Hotel overnight stay.

Back to Reykjavík
Your round trip through Iceland will come full circle today in Reykjavik. But before that, you will experience another spectacular day. Not far away is the thermal area of Haukadalur with the geyser Strokkur, which regularly shoots up to 20 metres into the air every 10-15 minutes. You will have plenty of time at both sites to observe and photograph these extraordinary natural phenomena.
