Your train journey begins in Helsinki, the capital of Finland. You travel by comfortable train towards Savonlinna - total journey time is a good 4 hours. On the way, you can enjoy a delicious meal in the train's dining car or order something to eat at your seat. On the way to Savonlinna, you will stop to change trains in Parikkala, the starting point for what Finns consider to be the most beautiful railway line in Finland. On this train journey of about an hour, you will understand why Finland is often called the "land of a thousand lakes". In fact, there are about 188,000 lakes in Finland. On arrival in the historic city of Savonlinna, you will pass the impressive Olavinlinna Castle. First, however, you will return to your hotel and spend the afternoon exploring the surrounding area at your leisure. For example, you can take a walk to the nearby island café, take a refreshing dip in the lake or relax in the hotel spa. From your room you have a magnificent view of Lake Saimaa - the largest lake in Finland. Overnight stay in a Superior hotel room.

After breakfast, it's time to explore the small town of Savonlinna with its medieval castle Olavinlinna in the heart of the Finnish Lake District. During the tour of the medieval Olavinlinna Castle (1-2 hours) you will learn a lot about the local history of the area. Followed by lunch at the nearby Majakka restaurant, which offers very good vegetarian dishes. The afternoon is at your leisure. You may wish to sample some delicious local vendace (called muikku) at the Savonlinna market or simply stroll around the town and along the lake before returning to your hotel. You also have the option to visit Riihisaari - a nature and museum centre on Lake Saimaa or visit the local brewery. Of course, the hotel's spa area will be at your disposal again. In the evening you can have dinner as you wish. Enjoy the sunset on the balcony of your hotel room overlooking the seemingly endless Lake Saimaa. Overnight stay in a Superior hotel room.

After breakfast, your journey continues - first on foot to the bus station and then by comfortable express bus to the city of Kuopio (just under 3 hours). Upon arrival, you can
leave your bags at your nearby accommodation and make your way to the city centre. A wonderful guided culinary walk (2-3 hours) awaits you! Visit Kuopio's beautiful market hall and market. Sample some local delicacies and have a varied lunch with them. Later, you may want to stroll around the city, visit Kuopio Cathedral or perhaps enjoy an ice cream at the old harbour. Kuopio also offers many outdoor recreational activities, such as cycling and boating on the lake. We are happy to give tips. After a relaxing or active afternoon in the city, you will be transferred from your accommodation to the Puijo lookout tower for dinner (transfer or walk of about 10 minutes), where you can enjoy a three-course meal made from local ingredients while enjoying the view of the lake landscape stretching to the horizon. This dinner will certainly remain in your memory for a long time. Afterwards it is back to your
from where you will depart for Oulu the next morning. Overnight stay at the B&B.

After breakfast, check-out and board the train right next to your B&B. This beautiful train journey from Kuopio to Oulu takes about 4 hours and was voted one of the best rural train journeys in Europe by The Guardian. On this train journey you will see fields, forests and lakes, as well as traditional Finnish wooden houses in the countryside. Be sure to keep an eye out for the wooden station buildings along the way - especially in Kajaani.
