Active in Una National Park around Bihac - INTI Tours
6 days of pure nature in the mountains and on the waters in Una National Park
The area around Bihac is beautiful and rich in magnificent nature. The Una River springs pure and clean from one of the deepest and most unexplored karst springs in the world. It runs for two hundred kilometers through untouched park landscapes with waterfalls and cascades of crystal clear water. The people of the region are proud of their river and of their history.
Historically, the area around Bihac was for a long time the "entrance to Europe" - and the present is not exempt from this. There are a number of refugee camps with migrants from Pakistan, Afghanistan and other places, all trying to get on to other European countries. The Learn for Life Empowerment Project, with which we offer our Bosnia and Herzegovina trips, is building legal gainful employment for refugees in the region. In this way, people can build a new livelihood and illegal entry into Europe is no longer necessary. The work with the refugees is always in harmony with the local population. There is a stable tourist infrastructure with small hotels and resorts on the river, the hospitality of the people is very warm and great.
Bihać-Una region is the closest Bosnian region to Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Denmark, so it is the most easily accessible for you as a customer. The drive from Zagreb, Zadar or Split takes less than four hours with breaks and is on well-maintained roads. It has the "old European charm" of thousand year old architecture as well as centuries old wooden constructions that are still in use. The Una river basin is dotted with pretty watermills, impressive 13th century castles and the so-called Off Museum, which depicts local history.
The starting point for the offered short trips is Kulen Vakuf. The place is about three hours by car from the international airports of Split or Zadar, and about four hours by car from Zagreb. The journey from Zadar on the coast is very short. For nature lovers, there are national parks, caves and other scenic highlights, and for the historically inclined, there are Roman and Ottoman Empire sites, plus wineries and local cheese factories.
Split and Zadar are also connected by ferry to Italy. A guide from Kulen Vakuf will pick you up at the airport. If you wish to travel by your own car, calculate eight hours' drive from Munich, for example. Start or end of a tour through Bosnia and Herzegovina can also be the Croatian coast.
The offered tour is most suitable for single travelers, couples or a group of friends up to 8 persons.

Itinerary
Leisure in Kulen Vakuf
You can spend today's first day in the Kulen Vakuf area in different ways, depending on your wishes. The village is located about three km from the border in a small valley of the Una River. The mountains surrounding the village rise to more than 1,100 metres on both sides. The ruins of Ostrovica Castle - one of the largest fortifications in the region - tower above Kulen Vakuf. Characteristic of the village itself are the terraces of houses on the banks of the Una River. The village has natural beauties such as waterfalls and other castle ruins in the immediate vicinity. You can easily reach some of them by bike. In Kulen Vakuf itself you will find local handicrafts and historical farms. Preparing and eating local dishes is certainly also one of the special highlights.
Alternatively, trekking and fly-fishing are possible with a local guide (to avoid dangerous wildlife and landmines). About a 30-minute drive northeast of Kulen Vakuf, you can visit the prestigious ethno-village of Čardaklije.
Just tell us your wishes and interests!
Rafting in the white waters of the Una from Štrbački buk to Japodski Otoci
The second day includes one of the key activities of your trip - white water rafting. Due to the height of the water level, the season starts in mid-May. This rafting route leads from Štrbački buk to Japodski Otoci. The Una River forms a natural border between Bosnia and Herzegovina with Croatia and the stretch downstream from Štrbački buk offers rafters the excitement and beauty that is unparalleled in Europe! For this you will be picked up at your accommodation and taken to the river. Briefing by the local professional guide. Experience about three hours of splashing white water rafting through fabulous natural scenery, surely an unforgettable tour. Alternatively, you can go on a guided hike or go fishing within the National Park in the Štrbački Buk area.
Accommodation this evening is in the north of the park at Villa Japodski Otoci . Japodski Otoci is a fantastic property built by Armin Amidzic and his family over the last ten years. It offers a terrace overlooking the garden, also a sun terrace, a bar and a restaurant.

In the Una National Park
The third day offers several options. If you wish to continue the kayaking or rafting experience, we recommend staying another night in Japodski Otoci to reduce the time lost due to the transfer. In this case, for example, an option would be a more relaxed river experience slightly upstream from Martin Brod to Kulen Vakuf or kayaking from Japodski Otoci to a point downstream. Optionally, you can also rent a bike with a bike guide. Or you can simply explore the beautiful area.
A more adventurous option would be the transfer to the Una Kiro Rafting Centre. Mr Kiro was the first man to offer rafting on the Una River, his experience is impressive - and his accommodations are really wonderful. With him you can go kayaking, rafting, diving or just do photo safaris.
You tell us where you would like to focus and we will design your individual offer.
Rooms are offered for around 30 euros per night, including breakfast (a little less has been offered, but this estimate is without the "group rate" and the implied obligations of multiple bookings). However, it is the activities on offer that make this an attractive idea, as they offer river diving with SCUBA equipment. They have enough equipment for 6 people and charge 50 euros per day, with the first 3 hours being instruction and the rest diving. It was mentioned that cave diving is possible, a rare experience in any place.
The Kiro Centre would also be an ideal venue for larger groups as the riverside dining area is exclusive to their guests and no outside visitors are invited to dine. In fact, the Kiro Centre suggested that their venue would be perfect for multi-day 'stag party' type bookings, with group accommodation and activities at quite affordable prices. We recommend keeping all options open.

Bihac and its cultural sights
Today's programme includes a historical and cultural tour of Bihac. The town is situated in the Una Valley, which extends into a wide basin. Above and below the city area, however, the river runs through narrow gorges. To the southeast of Bihać, the mountains of the Grmeč range rise to over 1,100 metres, and to the west the Croatian border runs along the Plješevica mountain range, whose highest peak is Ozeblin at 1,649 metres. The town was first mentioned in 1260 in a document of King Béla IV, where it is referred to as the property of the Cistercian monastery of Topusko.
The Fethija Mosque of Bihac is absolutely worth seeing. It dates from around 1266 and is a former church that was once built in a typical Gothic architectural style. However, when the Ottomans took over the town in the 1500s, it was converted into a mosque. The design of the Fethija Mosque today still bears many of the features of the old church, revealing a fascinating mix of both religions inside. But it is not only the mosque that stands for the Ottoman period, also the Ottoman Türbe - an Ottoman mausoleum. However, it is designed somewhat differently from other types of mausoleums, because it has an octagonal shape and is surrounded by green trees and old stone walls.
A nice place to visit is also the picturesque village of Ostrožac, which is not too far from the centre of Bihać. Here you will also find Ostrožac Castle, whose history dates back to the 16th century. It was also built by the Ottomans. Ostrožac Castle is situated on top of a hill and offers concerts ofr during the summer months.
If desired, other excursions to the surrounding area can also be organised.
- Breakfast
Downstream from Bihac
The morning is at your leisure. Right after lunch, today will give you another more relaxed kayaking experience downstream from Bihac. A few stops for swimming and refreshments are planned along the way. The end of this tour will be at the site of a kayak safari property, about 45 minutes by car from downtown Bihac. There is a small hut on the beautiful property where you can change clothes. On site, you can stay at the luxurious Kostelski Buk Hotel or at a campsite. There is a restaurant, bar, wellness centre, gym and swimming area by the river.
