Mexico Special Tour: Conquest and its consequences - INTI Tours
500 years after the landing of Hernán Cortés in the empire of the Aztecs - a search for traces
>>> This tour has to be postponed due to circumstances. The new date will be published here as soon as it is fixed!
On the occasion of the Great State Exhibition Baden-Württemberg AZTEKEN in the Linden-Museum Stuttgart, the Evang. Bildungszentrum Hospitalhof Stuttgart is organising this special Mexico trip together with INTI Tours.
Mexico Special Trip: Conquest and its consequences - a search for traces in Mexico 500 years after Hernán Cortés landed in the Aztec Empire.
Experience a unique journey to the advanced civilisations of Mexico. Let yourself be carried away into the mystical world of the Mayas and Aztecs, the Toltecs and the Mixtecs and visit the historic pyramids of past advanced civilisations. In 1519, Hernán Cortés landed on the Mexican coast with a few ships and around 500 Spanish soldiers. He thus initiated the downfall of the mighty Aztecs and paved the way for the conquest of all of Mexico.
Quetzalcóatl - translated as "feathered serpent" - was, according to legend, a god-king of the Toltec people, who had dominion over central Mexico before the Aztecs. One day he was outwitted by another god, Tezcatlipoca, through sorcery and driven out of his city of Tula. He fled east to the Gulf of Mexico with the promise that one day he would return to take possession of his kingdom. According to tradition, he was to return in 1519. It was precisely in this year that Hernán Cortés landed on the Mexican Gulf coast and was therefore mistaken by the Aztecs for the returning god Quetzalcóatl and given an honourable welcome. The legend is a valid reason for the downfall of the Aztec empire.
Get to know Mexico in its diversity, originality and the authenticity of the Indígenas. In mutual exchange during various encounters, you will learn how colonisation has permanently changed the world of the indigenous Mexican population and what traces it has left up to the present day. Today, the indigenous population in Mexico is one of the most socially disadvantaged groups: Infrastructure projects are planned and carried out for the land they inhabit in which they are not involved, mining concessions are granted on a grand scale to mining companies under the current government, to name just a few examples. Human rights violations and violence increased significantly since 2006. On 1 December 2018, a new president took office in Mexico, who has given many people reason to hope for a change in these circumstances. On the trip, you will have the opportunity to exchange views with representatives of human rights organisations in Mexico on these issues.
Last but not least, enjoy the natural beauty of Mexico: the majestic volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, the Sumidero Canyon and the tropical Yucatán with its paradisiacal Caribbean beaches and crystal clear water. You will be accompanied by Martina Ehrlich from INTI Tours, who speaks fluent Spanish and will enable you to enjoy travel experiences away from the tourist attractions.

Visit to Capulálpam de Méndez
Only about 70 kilometres from Oaxaca lies the indigenous community of Capulálpam. - Since the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) came into force in 1994, Mexico's indigenous communities have come under increasing pressure. Transnational mining companies want to extract raw materials from their territories. They are favoured by the Mexican government, which generously grants concessions to mine gold, silver and other minerals. The foreign companies hardly have to pay any taxes, and the local people usually go away empty-handed. Often they even lose their homes. The small community of Capulálpam in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca shows that things can be different. For many years, the indigenous population of Capulálpam de Méndez has successfully defended their right to water, a clean environment and self-determined development. In the last decades, the local population has successfully resisted the mining activities of the big companies and today focuses on ecotourism and sustainable local economy. You will visit the village community, meet those responsible and learn how the concepts came about and are currently being implemented locally. A discussion with Knut Hildebrandt, author and expert on the region, is planned. Overnight stay in cabanas run by the village community.

OMIECH was founded in the 1980s to collect, protect and preserve the knowledge of many indigenous healers and midwives of the Tzotzil from the highlands of Chiapas. Their centre and also the Mayan Medicine Museum built there are located in San Cristobal de las Casas. They work together with 13 communities, some of which are three hours away by car, and the midwives there. The Maya Museum offers a good insight into the Maya medicine of the region and the Cosmovision Maya (We humans are only a part of the fabric of life and nature that surrounds us. We must live in harmony with the laws of nature, otherwise we and nature will become ill). Visit to the Mayan Medicine Museum, meeting, exchange. Afterwards lunch in San Cristobál de las Casas.
