Itinerary
Arrival in the Central Valley surrounded by mountains and volcanoes
Depending on arrival, reception and transfer from the airport to your hotel. The lively capital San José is nestled in the central valley at an altitude of 1,100 metres. With a constantly growing population, San José is a lively big city with many shops and street stalls. In the city centre, various places invite you to linger, such as the Parque Morazan, several churches and, of course, the Plaza de la Cultura with the interesting National Theatre, a replica of the Vienna Opera. Whether in the Gold Museum, the Jade Museum or the National Museum - interesting testimonies and treasures of Costa Rica's history are exhibited everywhere. On the Avenida Central, you can shop and browse in countless shops. At an art market in front of the National Museum, you can buy souvenirs for friends and family. During the day, it is easy to get around the city on foot; at night, we recommend taxis.
Almost to the border with Nicaragua
The tiny village of Boca Tapada is far away from all the hustle and bustle, very close to untouched rainforests and only twelve kilometres from the border to Nicaragua. The region around Boca Tapada can be reached from Pital via a gravel road past huge cassava, papaya and pineapple plantations. The Río San Carlos with its wide riverbed and the surrounding rainforest areas offer a great jungle experience far away from any civilisation noise. Birdwatchers have already discovered more than 350 different bird species in this zone. Especially the rare green macaw (soldier macaw) has found a retreat here and nests in tree hollows of the rare Almendro tree.
> Travel time approx. 3.5 hours
- Breakfast
By motorboat across the Rio San Carlos
After breakfast, you will start in the motorboat at the hotel jetty and begin your trip downstream on the Rio San Carlos. During the tour you may see caimans, turtles, bats, herons, kingfishers, king vultures and many other species - maybe even a tree full of scarlet macaws or one of the rare soldier macaws. Very close to the border with Nicaragua, you will then visit the village of Boca San Carlos and have the opportunity to meet some of Costa Rica's inhabitants. Afterwards, you will return to the lodge around lunchtime. The humid, tropical air is full of the sounds of nature. During the summer nights, cicadas sing a concert. Montezuma Oropendulas let their typical call resound from the trees. People looking for an original nature experience are in the right place here. Hikes through the sometimes muddy rainforest paths in search of insects, reptiles and amphibians, or even the odd shy mammal, await all explorers here. The rest of the day is yours to do as you please!
> Morning activity included
> Tour start time approx. 9 am, duration approx. 3 hours, English guided, not private
> Included: transport, water, rubber boots and nature guide

To La Fortuna at the Arenal Volcano
The majestic Arenal Volcano is already waiting for you. You can see its imposing, conical shape from afar - from the lowlands of the San Carlos region. Around the volcano there are numerous natural beauties to discover. From waterfalls to cooled lava flows and huge trees to hot springs heated by volcanic veins, everything is here. Until 2010, the volcano was visibly active on a regular basis and there were repeated emissions of smoke clouds and glowing rock fragments. Currently, the volcano is only active internally and no longer shows any activity externally. The period of regular eruptions began with a major eruption in 1968 that destroyed an entire village and continued with minor eruptions until 2010. During this time, the volcano has become a popular tourist destination and a good starting point for tours. In the town of La Fortuna - the small town at the foot of the volcano - you will find a variety of accommodation, restaurants and shops.
> Driving time approx. 2.5 hours
- Breakfast
At eye level with the birds
On this exciting tour, you walk independently for about two to three hours through the tops of the primary forest. The path takes you across 16 bridges at an impressive height, where you discover the rainforest's insane biodiversity in an unusual way. Various bird species as well as spider monkeys can be observed from time to time in the thicket of the treetops. When the weather is good, there are also great views of the Arenal Volcano.
> Activity included
> Tour departure times: approx. 8, 9, 10, 12, 13 and 14 hrs, duration: approx. 2.5 hours.
> Note: Please indicate your preferred time, you will be informed of the specific times in the voucher.
> No guide included (available at an extra charge).

Hiking and leisure at the foot of the impressive volcano
This is a day of your own design. A good infrastructure, unique natural spaces and a wide range of tours and activities are the strengths of the region around the Arenal Volcano. Hikers get their money's worth in the Arenal National Park with its lava fields, the interesting secondary rainforest and great views over Lake Arenal. Canyoning (abseiling over a waterfall), canopy, rafting and windsurfing as well as a visit to the Venado caves offer action. Travellers who prefer to enjoy nature in peace and avoid strenuous hikes can visit the Danaus Ecological Centre, for example. This is a small oasis in the middle of all the pastures. Wild animals such as sloths, agoutis, caimans and toucans find a retreat in the three-hectare reforested area. Several thermal springs, surrounded by tropical gardens, invite you to relax. We recommend the thermal springs "Ecotermales". These are somewhat smaller than others, but particularly beautiful. In the town of La Fortuna you can eat delicious food in nice restaurants and local "sodas".

Playa Hermosa - fine sand and palm trees all the way to the beach
Today's journey takes you to Playa Hermosa on the northern peninsula of Nicoya in the province of Guanacaste. As the name suggests (hermosa = beautiful), a beautiful sandy beach awaits you. The sea is often calm here, the beach is characterised by fine sand and only leads slowly into the sea. So families can also swim here particularly well. If you like to go out or dance in the evening, you can go to nearby Coco. The region is also very good for diving.
> Travel time approx. 4 hours

Sun, beach and sea air
Beach days at your leisure! The beaches of Guanacaste are a wonderful place to relax. Playa Hermosa - in German "the beautiful beach" - has been awarded the blue flag, which stands for high environmental standards. It is a beach with calm waters. Therefore, it attracts mainly travellers who want to swim in warm water and enjoy the sun. However, a variety of activities such as snorkelling, scuba diving, kayaking, canoeing and fishing trips are also offered on site. You can also visit the neighbouring beaches. There are good snorkelling opportunities at Playa Ocotal, for example. With a bit of luck, turtles can be seen on the beach.
- Breakfast
Back to the Central Valley and on to home
Unfortunately, your holiday is now coming to an end and so today you will drive back to the Central Valley with enough "buffer time". This is where the majority of the Costa Rican population lives. And this is where the capital San José and the main airport Juan Santamaría near Alajuela are located. You drop off your rental car 3.5 hours before departure at the airport office of the rental car partner in Alajuela. They will take you to the terminal from here. With many great travel memories in your luggage, you will then board your flight home.
> Note: We recommend that you spend the last night in the Central Valley. If you do not wish to do so, you do so at your own risk. We cannot accept any liability should you miss your flight.
